What is 4WD?

4WD, also known as “four-wheel drive,” consists of a traditional 4×4 drivetrain. The primary difference between 4WD and AWD is that, while 4WD systems can deliver power to the front and rear axles, they can also deliver a specified amount of power between the right and left wheels. Generally, 4WD systems are engineered for maximum off-road capability and are designed for vehicles with truck-based platforms.

What is AWD?

AWD, also known as “all-wheel drive,” is a specific drivetrain configuration with torque directed from the engine to the rear and front axles, then to all four wheels through differentials. There are two kinds of AWD systems: full-time AWD and part-time AWD. As you might guess, full-time AWD systems always deliver torque to the rear and front axles, while part-time AWD systems monitor driving behavior and road conditions to decide whether to send torque to the front axle alone. You’ll generally see AWD systems on cars with unibody frames.

Which is For You: 4WD or AWD?

Now that we’ve covered the difference between AWD and 4WD, you may wonder which is best for you? What’s ideal for you will depend on your needs and priorities. Generally, AWD vehicles tend to be best for suburban drivers hoping for added traction in difficult weather, while 4WD is ideal for those hoping for improved off-road performance or onsite truck use for work!
